I think the UofU truly thinks they are an elite academic institution because

They are in the Pac-12 and that they have received millions of dollars in research grants because of their Pac-12 status. They truly are obsessed with that affiliation, so would say more than their AAU startups. They live in a strange bubble up there, not understanding the true quality of their own school.
