Just kindling is going to be near impossible for a Deacon. You are going to need a sufficient amount of tinder. Google some good examples of home made tinder.

We do this a couple of times a year with our DQ, but I've never set up the flags. The first time you do it they won't be consistent enough to compete. Some might not succeed at all.

We use disposable roasting tins to contain the fires in the parking lot but, be sure to move the tins around a bit they can get hot enough to damage the pavement if they have a fire burning in them for a period of time.

Good luck, and have a great time. Also, don't forget to have a safety conversation about hatchets, leave no trace fire skills, and general fire safety. Bring a bucket and put water in it to emphasize the point even though their fires will burn themselves out quickly.
