That's not what they said.
They said there was no evidence to support the rumors/allegations.
This wasn't a case of them saying "A lot of people are saying it happened, but we don't know, we haven't seen the evidence..."
This was a case of them saying there are allegations/rumors, and there is no evidence those rumors are true.
The way you characterize it questions your credibility.
