According to many on here, I guess I would fall into the "Tuiaki lover" category b/c I don't hate everything about our defense. I think the D has stepped up at times when needed:
Got timely sacks and turnovers against Zona
Gave the O two short fields in the first quarter against Utah (in which we only managed 3 points from)
Gave up one big play to ASU but otherwise forced them to not screw up for a whole (and they couldn't help themselves)
Came up huge in the second half of Utah State; other than the third down scramble they largely kept Utah State at bay and on their side of the field in that half.
But they were also completely absent at times when needed:
Flat out sucked against USF
Completely rolled over after turnovers against Boise State
Most of the game against Baylor it looked like they were facing a G5 Scout Team D (although, if we're being honest only OK State has been able to stop Baylor)
Football is a back and forth kind of game, with highs and lows, with each of the 3 "sides" picking the others up at various points in the season. Right now, the D isn't picking the team up at all, or at least with any level of consistency. The trends are certainly concerning. I believe that will change a bit (or at least I want to believe it) over the course of the season.
I just get tired of the tireless bashing of everything in relation to the Defense. I also don't get the endless petitions about the D being "fine."
The D isn't great; maybe we're young; maybe the coaching staff stinks; maybe the coaching staff doesn't trust the players b/c of the youth. But why does it feel like every other post is about the D?
Can we not address the fact that the onside kick has been available to anyone who wanted it all season long (and I suspect it will be against Wazzu as well)? Can we not talk about why the running game has completely disappeared? Can we not get back to the Baylor vs Jaren debates when it comes to slinging the rock? Can we get back to complaining about why BYU hasn't figured out how to make enough Cougartails to satisfy the masses?
