It's my largest holding. Fortunately, i bought about half in December before the incomparable blow out beat and raise in last month's report.
It remains an under the radar gem, IMO.
Highly capable, inspired, committed leadership is my sine qua non for a major investment and UPST has that; i.e. top leadership with world class vision who values their fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders and who also values and executes effectively in their executive role.
When an undiscovered long term hyper growth company that is valued like a slow grower finally gets noticed, and momentum traders decide to drive the stock price down, i consider it a gift and an opportunity. But conviction is needed to hold for the longer term.
Upstart is selling at 12X 2022 revenue with triple digit growth, and likely 40%-50% growth for several years ahead with constant innovation via the AI flywheel, a multi year product quality lead, and ever expanding markets.
I'm sure there are better investments out there, but i don't know about them.
Not sure that i can name a giant company that came onto the scene relatively quickly on a hypergrowth track that didn't suffer 40%-70% stock pullbacks along the way. Amazon? Netflix? No, they suffered major drops. You can look it up.
Unfortunately most companies don't realize such happy endings. You have to pick the right companies with exceptional visionary executive leadership who have the capability and energy to take over the world, as did Jobs, Gates, Bezos, Hastings, Page, Musk, Dorsey, etc. Not all top visionaries are suited for executive leadership. And the true giants grow out of the executive role in their later years, and move on to address universal problems like world hunger, disease, climate, space, equality, etc.
That's more than you wanted to know i'm sure and more than i intended to share.
In a word, it's all about picking the great future leaders of companies with unlimited vision for future business. I think UPST has a higher probability of being one of those kinds of investments than other disruptor stock plays.
Disclaimer: I'm wrong a lot.
