I'd urge you to check out PCP airguns.

PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) air rifles are a lot of fun. Basically the rifle has an air tank on board that is charged with a pump or air cylinder (like a scuba tank). Each rifle is different, but most can get 40 or so high power shots from each charge. The rifles can get super high quality and you can get calibers all the way up to .357 or 9mm size. Many rifles come in .22 or .25 and a lot in .30. These guns are far from toys. They've got the power of 22 rifles and are quiet and fun to shoot. Also, suppressors are legal with air rifles, so a lot of these guns are whisper quiet.

You can get into it for a few hundred bucks. The best rifles can run over $2k. You'll pay as much for a high end PCP as you would a semi custom rifle. You don't have to spend that much, though. There are less expensive options (although you'll end up with one of the 'good' guns the longer you're into it). The great thing about air guns is that once you get set up, pellets are not that expensive.

If you're in utah, a great resource we have here is the Utah Airguns shop that sits where Van Wagganen's used to be. They are one of the premier air gun shops in the country and they also have an indoor shooting range. If you're curious, go in there and check things out.

To charge your guns, you can buy your own pump, which can be expensive, or buy an air tank. That's what I do. I have a tank that looks like a scuba tank. You can get it charged at places with high power air pumps, like paint ball places or fire houses. It's usually free or only a couple of dollars. A full tank will fill your gun many, many times.
