I don’t think he is saying the word is taboo. I doubt he has stopped using the
word unity all together. If he has then yes your point is valid.

But I’m pretty sure he is talking about using the word when it is obvious it’s being used to push a certain point of view.
For lack of thinking of another example, let’s go with the phrase “me too”.

If the NFL had plastered the words “me too” on all their fields back when that movement was happening would you also say that it’s just two words and that the nfl wasn’t pushing a certain point of view?

Just like the words “me too” doesn’t always mean “I also”, unity and equality in this specific political climate obviously convey a specific message. That’s what slogans are meant to do.
