... brains and bodies on the line. So many have life-long orthopedic issues or concussive problems. I agree that many of these issues started pre-college, and, for the select few, will be exacerbated in their pro careers. Five+ years seems a little long to me. 2-4 years seems about right to help them get through those first few years of career course correction with some safety net. They're actually relatively very cheap to insure at that age since, by nature, they are relatively healthy who don't have whole lot of chronic systemic diseases (Diabetes, HTN, MS, etc...)
I don't have a huge problem throwing COVID in there too for this season, as I think the long-term health issues are likely being overstated and are more anecdotal fear-based cases being promoted in various media outlets.
