It's been too long, but the commentary I've seen
was that it was helmet to knee right at the sideline. Hancock was already 3rd string, so that's probably why he was still in there. The 4th string was Steve Young's little brother.

On a side note, there was a non-member walk-on QB who got cut from the team before the season. After Hancock went down, he got a call asking if he would like to practice with the team and be on the active roster at the Aloha Bowl. He gladly accepted, but didn't play. That was his only season on the roster. That's how thin BYU was at QB.
