Because if the growth is compounding, it takes a while and then all of the sudden explodes. This is less than doubling every day but does seem to have exponential growth absent strong interventions.

I’m not at all arguing in favor of downplaying economic impact, just saying the numbers on the virus side are pretty alarming.
