Sports for over 50 years. I have seen coaches and players come and go, new facilities been built, change of leagues/independence and I hate to say it, but I believe our best days ship has sailed.
Reasons:
1. Too many schools now competing for top poly and LDS athletes. There was a time when we seemed to get more than our fair share. That ship has sailed.
2. Lavelle Edwards brought in a new scheme to offense which worked for lesser athletes. Now there are new schemes on offense with much better players running them and much smarter coaches than what we appear to have currently Coaching them. ( I'm not one that thinks firing the head coach will help.)
3.Independence is leaving a void at the end of ach year and players and fans understand that. Does a player really want to strive to play in the famous potato bowl at the end of the year? I hate the utes, but Katie bar the door on recruiting if they make it to the Rose Bowl and win this year.
4. Do you really think we are ever going to go undefeated and qualify for the playoffs or a big six bowl? Do you realize how close we came to starting zero and five? We would have needed a plus 5 in turnovers to beat Utah or Washington. What are the odds for that with our current players? We pulled a royal flush to beat Tennessee and USC!
5. Our coaching options are very limited. Must be LDS. Must be willing to work for less money or be a very young up and coming coordinator. If we get one of those and he is any good, we will never pay what he could get at another school, like Virginia etc......
These five were just off the top of my head. Anyone that has watched BYU football for 50 years can add additional items to the reason our ship has sailed. It is nice to be passionate, and young and think anything is possible. As you mature and become more experienced, you realize just how difficult that is to accomplish. GO COUGARS!!!!!
