It looks like they included it as one of many events occuring in SLC on Pioneer

Day. They didn't give "Pie and Beer Day" its own front-page article, did they?

Their job is to inform people of what's going on. Seems pretty reasonable to point out a quirky celebration with an (arguably) clever play on the holiday's name that lots of people might not know about. I don't understand your objection.
