It’s seems like simple economics—there’s more supply than demand—so lower the price. If BYU admin wants to schedule Thursday games at midnight, scorching mid-August games against non-D1 teams, and freezing November games, they can’t act surprised when some fans choose cheer on their team from the comfort of their living rooms. Better to the lower the prices on tickets, thereby filling the stadium, increasing fan enthusiasm, making it louder and creating the desired 12th man, and enhancing the overall game experience for everyone (who like being part of a sellout). Then demand will increase and BYU can raise prices down the road if it wants to try and maximize profit. At the very least charging students less for tickets would help fill the student section, if that’s a problem.
