Just look at the stats for the past 10 years:
Gonzaga conf titles 15 (reg season 8, conf tourn 7).
Duke conf titles: 4 (reg season 1, conf tourn 3).
BYU conf titles: 3 (reg season 3,* conf tourn 0). *None since joining WCC.
Duke has ONLY won its league regular season title ONCE in the past decade. It has ONLY won the ACC tournament THREE times in that time.
By contrast, Gonzaga simply has BYU’s number. Crazy results like this can happen (even when BYU is recruiting all of the best players from surrounding high schools to come here and has great recruiting classes). Consequently, Gonzaga has won the WCC regular season an astounding EIGHT times and the conference tournament SEVEN times.
If the MUCH WEAKER Duke (4 combined ACC titles in the last 10 years) replaced DOMINANT Gonzaga (15 combined titles in 10 years), BYU would have had MUCH MORE success in the last decade. BYU would probably EASILY have beaten Duke in SEVERAL of those years! That would have gotten into the NCAA tournament more, and gotten us seeded higher, too. With all of those extra NCAA berths and dominating Duke, it’s EASY to see that we would probably have SEVERAL number one NCAA seeds, multiple final fours, and at least one NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP — if not several — in the last decade if only we could have played Duke in the WCC instead of Gonzaga.
So, to the guy who wrote the linked thread, good job but you are actually selling BYU short here.
