22. Point is, at the top it stratifies more. So while no one bats an eye between a 20 and 22, it's actually a much bigger statistical/percentile jump than from a 30 (BYU average) and 34.
So while a 34 seems a lot better than a 30, and while BYU obviously isn't accepting any kids with a 22, 30 to 34 isn't the huge jump most view it as based just in a numerical value. We all may see a 34 or 35 and say "that kid is amazing" (and it is likely true), but to the BYU adcom a kid with a 31 vs 34 with the grades of the OP is going to meet the matrix baseline to be considered for admission either way and at that point they are looking at other things.
As for what those other things are, that's the million-dollar question that nobody seems to have a good answer for.
