The problem is that studies show that women with working mothers earn more than
women with stay-at-home moms, while men are about the same (whether or not their mom worked outside the home has no correlation to their earnings). So using future earnings as the metric might well result in stay-at-home moms having a negative value, which makes no sense.

Two-parent vs one-parent homes is a different matter, but that is measuring something different (not stay-at-home moms).
