schools.
I know a family who are huge Texas A&M fans. Their oldest daughter played club volleyball all they way up and did quite well. Their hope was that she'd get an athletic scholarship to A&M, but they did not recruit her. She signed elsewhere, but the family's fanaticism for A&M has not diminished at all. They'll follow their daughter and cheer for the other school in WVB while she plays there, but that is about it.
With BYU it seems in many cases Church members expect a scholarship even if their teenager is not a high level athlete. When BYU doesn't offer, the family gets offended. The fact that most other schools also did not recruit their kid seems of little consequence - BYU is OBLIGATED! Of course, if their kid is all-world and gets offered by everybody, the same family seems just fine with not giving BYU the slightest attention. Definitely a one-way street.
Again, I don't think this is the case with Hergets, but our coaches should probably be trained how to interact with families in cases like this so they don't get offended.
