that tv wants.
he can't really dumb down the schedule or byu can't sell the games. and he can't really take less money because the byu athletic department now depends on indy money (this last point is my speculation, but i've had a few people confirm it)
again.....the problems with indy are simply boiled down to 3 very clear occurrences that will not change:
-recruits don't like it. we are ranked below all p5 teams in the 60s in recruiting. and to raise our average to something meaningful we would need 4 or 5 years in a row of recruiting an octave higher than we ever have. that simply has not happened since byu went indy.
-the season (after sept) is meaningless. this year will be a perfect example. byu has the biggest win in college football, one of its best wins in its 40 year year history, but it means nothing in the grand scheme. byu will be in the janitor supply bowl before christma if we get to 6 wins. because we don't have a conference tied bowl game, we won't have a conference championship to add to the wisky win to try to secure a bigger game, and we don't have a seat at that ny6 game table because we're not in a conference. if byu had the wisky win and a MWC crown this year, we would have a chance at an NY6 game, which goes to the best g5 team.
-the front loaded schedule: TH is forced to frontload our schedule because that's the only space most teams have to put non conference games. it sucks and makes it very hard to have consistency year to year, and will essentially prevent us from ever having a 12-0 or 11-1 season.
