You’re right, they can claim conference of champions
Because they have the most championships of all sports. It’s a laughable title when referring to football and basketball, where they haven’t won a championship since 2004 and 1998 respectively.

It's not a misnomer though. They have the top three schools in overall NCAA championships, and 4 of the top 10.
