There is a perception issue as well. If we go back to a G5 conference, there is really no way around labeling us G5. However, since we are P5 quality as an overall program, it allows everyone to label us as a P5 equivalent, which has been happening.
This matters for recruiting, for bowl invitations, for potential play-off consideration. All very important things.
When we are losing like we are, those things don't mater a lot. When we are winning, it will make a very meaningful difference. If, let's say, we were to run the table one season, or even go 11-1, as an independent with wins over 5-7 P5 opponents, we would be fully in the conversation for a playoff berth. That never happens if we are in a G5 conference. We wouldn't even be considered.
Going back to a G5 conference is a very short-term outlook. Independent not only earns us more money, it also improves the perception of us, and also makes it much easier to jump to a P5 conference, should an invitation be extended.
We all have different opinions, but I would not be willing to sacrifice the greater long-term benefits of independence for the short-term benefits of G5.
