You get mercy and forgiveness of sin through Christ. BYU's HC is not intended to provide mercy and forgiveness. The HCO is the enforcement arm of a code required by a school that kids choose to go to. The HCO doesn't determine if someone sinned. They don't determine if you can go to the temple. They don't determine your eternal salvation, so people need to stop acting like that is the intent.
If you don't want academic consequences, then don't break the man-made laws you agreed to follow. What purpose does a code of conduct have if everyone's plan is to rely on a forgiving judge, with whom they have a personal relationship, so that you don't ever have consequences?
