The Xbox One isn't a bad console by any stretch of the imagination, and has some good exclusive titles (some of which I haven't played but have gotten great reviews).
If there is a choice between the PS4 and Xbox One for gamers... the choice is clear on which graphics are better, exclusive game content for cross-platform games (for example Destiny players on the PS4 get content not available on the Xbox One), better hardware, better operating system interface, better online service, more available games and a wider variety (~340 vs ~200), etc. Saying PS4 wins in these categories isn't saying that they're blowing Xbox out of the water, but the PS4 is better in these categories. That said, Microsoft has already completed updates on the operating system interface and online service, as well as had multiple price drops to make it 50 bucks cheaper than the PS4.
For casual gamers the PS4 still wins, but mainly due to what I referenced about independent gaming studios. If you're an old fart (30+) they have a metric crapton of games that look like what we grew up on but better. There are also a lot of breathtakingly beautifully drawn games, adventure games, puzzle games, strategy games, you name it. Of course all of these games look just a tad better on the PS4 due to the hardware.
Frankly, the Wii U has some amazingly fun games for the family. Yoshii's Woolly World, Splatoon, and other titles are really meant for the family. For younger kids, I don't think you can go wrong with a Wii U, but a teenager might balk at it.
I can go on for a bit about both consoles, but let the sales speak for themselves:
