I love BYU football, but it's not the pinnacle of my year. There was a time when it may have been, but I've realized that my relationship with God, my wife and kids, my friends, and my job/professional commitments all bring more value to my life. Football, much like other things, is simply a hobby. A means of entertainment, and it should, and will, never be anything more.
Ironically, football truly is 5th. Exactly where it should be. Not only for BYU fans, but also players, coaches, and administrators. BYU football is an institution of the Church of Jesus Christ. The fact that we win ANY games in a given year is a miracle. Love it or hate it, that IS EXACTLY what BYU football is, and it's exactly what BYU football is meant to be. That's not going to change any time soon, so I would suggest you lower your expectations a little bit, and enjoy the 10-2 / 11-1 season that we get every 10 or so years. The good news? We have the talent/experience laden team that typically results in a fantastic season.
I'm extremely optimistic, and excited for this season, but don't let life pass you by investing your hopes, dreams, and aspirations in a football team.
