As for the playing college ball requirement that I think you over value, there comes a point when the players just don't care. How many HC's played their college ball before their current players were even born? Do guys go to Alabama because Saban once played DB in college, or do they go to Bama cause Saban's a recognized great HC?
In the end, though, I think this entire discussion is pointless. Bronco's 48 years old. He's probably not going anywhere for at least 10-15 years if not 20+ years. The odds of anybody on the current staff replacing Bronco are pretty slim. At that point Howell most likely will have either moved on to another school (or even coaching altogether), or he may have proven such a great assistant that you'd be stupid to argue against his promotion. Who knows? I sure don't.
