If you're not a pet family, just don't. In our experience, the kids don't care
for long with a low-interaction pet like a Gerbil, and they take more to properly care for than you anticipate.
We got rabbits because we thought they'd be clean and easy. They are, but they're scared of us and the kids, super boring, and they try to chew our furniture and carpet every chance they get. Our kids don't care anymore, and I'm somewhere between barely tolerating and loathing them.
