comebacks and getting playing time for backups. When we break in new players it seems like they have a steep learning curve because they never get to actually play meaningful downs in big wins. Backup QB experience playing in a game is nothing more than a million handoffs to a RB with maybe 1 or 2 short yardage passes mixed in. Run the offense the way you normally run it, and if you score, great.
Besides this, you need to get a big fat lead before you put in backups. I have seen way too many games where BYU got a sizeable lead but then started playing as if the lead was double what it was, and the other team got back in the game and had a shot to win. It's irritating, and I don't understand how people don't realize how it's actually a backhanded slap in the face to the losing team. "Hey, I don't think you're good enough to top two touchdowns and a field goal, so yeah, I'm calling off the dogs. You're lucky I'm so merciful!"
Also, I'm not sure the proprietors of 54-10 have any room to preach about the immorality of RUTS.
