I just don't think in college football there's ever 16 teams deserving to play for the title. 16 teams is just too many. Undefeated teams are in automatically, regardless of ranking. Following which you go with rankings. Conference championships be darned. Until the league develops an system like European soccer where it controls the conferences, I think you go with rankings.
