Towards the end when Japan was using kamikaze attacks he was the deck of his ship with a headset giving and relaying orders when one of the guys firing guns at the kamikaze planes was killed. He just took off to take over the gun but forgot to take off the headset. He sprinted the 30 or so yards to the gun when the cord on his headset ran out of slack and jerked his feet right out from under him. He was trying to beat an incoming plane and stop it from crashing into his ship, when he flew up and back and hit the deck pretty hard he thought he was shot After a few dazed seconds he realized what had happened and took off the headset, it was strapped on with a chin strap, but it was too late to hit the incoming plane and he just stared as the plane flew in. He always said the plane was so close he could have reached up and touched the side of the plane, and that he'll never forget the look of the pilot as he flew by. Luckily the pilot misjudged the approach and narrowly flew over the ship and crashed in the ocean. He would always laugh when he talked about the headset knocking him on his butt, but would get really somber when talking about watching the pilot and plane crash.
