Up and down is net rating. The trapezoid is at the top of the chart, and then it extends at the very top left to right to ensure that the highest rated teams are in the trapezoid. Most teams are already in the middle of the chart left to right anyway. So essentially it is looking at the highest rated teams.

And, surprisingly enough, the highest rated teams are the teams that tend to still be in the tourney. Shocker!!!
