I haven't added on.. but i've seen it done both poor and great.
The problem with doing it yourself will be finding quality/reliable subs. Most (good) contractors will work with the same subs, and have everything scheduled in good order.

From start to finish.. The contractor that did my basement had things lined up so there wasn't a gap in work. From demo to finish work framers, plumbers, electricians, and HVAC all overlapped and finished in a crazy amount of time.

Doing it yourself expect to find subs that don't show up or constantly reschedule.

Another big issue would be getting permits.. IMHO, start asking everybody you know if they have a contractor they trust, or ask to talk to past customers of contractors you 'interview'.
