The problem is that if BYU hacks like Houston did, and they get whistled every
30 seconds. Houston played loose, and with complete reckless abandon, as teams often do, when they can feel they have the refs in their pocket. Granted, BYU played very poorly in almost every facet of the game, and would have lost regardless of refs - lots of really poor passes and numbskull plays leading to TO's (and easy pts off TO's), lots of ill-advised / forced shots, and poor position on defensive rebs (but with an uncanny number of really unlucky bounces as well).

But, BYU was not only playing on it's heels because of Houston's ever-present stifling defense, but also on their heels and frustrated, because the refs do too much "Kelvin Sampson-admiration" spectating, and fail to call an unbiased game. Sampson is a master, no doubt, and that kind of "D" wins NC's. But, the entire game is significantly affected by a team playing on it's heels, and frustrated - especially with the other team playing with reckless abandon. And KY knows that, which is why he was riding the refs for much of the game to call a more unbiased game. They did not.
