I think the existence of a relationship between Renarin and Rlain is an important plot point with regards to the unity between Singers/Listeners and Humans, etc. But the romantic side of things there felt forced at times with some of the subplots surrounding it seeming like it pulled you out of and was a distraction from the actual story.
