We do that as well. It is lighter, but you can still enjoy the game. I wouldn't do it for a movie, but most people are
not talking and engaging in other social activities during a movie. Also we have an open plan to the dining area to the left where you can split the lighting so those who are putting a puzzle together or playing a boardgame can still enjoy that in a bright space while those who would rather have it darker for a game can enjoy that as well.
