utah would cut BYU's throat if given the chance...see what they did when they joined the pac10.2
It is rumored that BYU had a chance to join the pac10 in the 80's but refused the offer because they had an agreement with utah that they would stay in the same conference together. The pac10 at that time didn't want utah, so BYU didn't join.
