I've moved away from hard sided if at all possible. This is what I travel with now:
For carry on, I prefer RedOxx, those bags are rugged and awesome, I have a small one for all my electronics (all charge cables, some first aid (epipen, meds and some snacks), surface pro, and steam deck all actually fit).

For the backpack, I'm using the Venture Divide 2000. With packing cubes and modern synthetics, I can fit 1 week worth of gear for business trips in it, including snacks, meds, toiletries, etc).

I no longer check baggage and traveling has been much better when I consolidated to those two pieces of kit.

I understand this doesn't work if you are traveling with family or want extra space for souvenirs and stuff. In that case, I just have whatever luggage I had on my mission. It's all the same to me. Mine doesn't even have roller wheels, it's so old school.
