most difficult first four starts of any QB to start for BYU in its history (four bowl teams, two ranked teams, all P5 teams) in his first year in the program or in any major college program in a season in which he hadn't been expected to play AT ALL -
and be surprised that he didn't look great in stretches.
Against comparable competition, he didn't look any worse than early 2013 Taysom Hill, or 2004 John Beck, or, heck, pick any Max Hall game against Utah.
Didn't get any warm up games against New Mexico or U Mass or Portland State or any of the kinds of teams that BYU QBs usually get to help them get into the flow.
Iowa State and WVU were two total team disasters. OU and Ok St are games that we very nearly won against ranked teams. Treating his numbers from those four opponents as if they're some huge indictment of his overall ability has always been silly.
