I've done the 500 degree oven then turn it off (except I took an insurance policy and turned it down to 200 instead)
I just didn't want to get hosed if my oven had more heat loss than others. I felt like it worked perfectly and had a great medium rare roast. I also monitored the internal temperature so I could pull it when it was perfect.
