I had a professor once do a twist on this scenario that was a follow-up to the first. He found that most people were willing to pull the lever because it was impersonal.
You are crossing a bridge and to your horror, you see a train about to cross under the bridge and ahead of it you can see 5 children tied to the tracks, about to meet their doom because of the oncoming train. You're not the only person who sees the impending tragedy, an old man is leaning over the bridge right. over. the. tracks to see the train come through. He's leaning VERY far over. Because you're a genius with physics and math, you know with absolute certainty that if you push the man over the rail, you will cause the train to derail at the expense of the man's life. You also know it's a Tesla train, there's no one on board so no one else would get hurt.
Do you push the old man over to save the children?
