Call the airline. Explain the situation. That’s the place to start.

They’ll cancel the return - call them or talk to an agent at the desk to sort it

If it’s not weather related he should try to get them to pay for a Lyft or Uber

They automatically cancel all future flights on the record number if you miss a flight
