same insane mistake that most fans make over and over — which is assuming a coach makes a player and not the other way around.
Coaches will always look as good as their players make them. Caleb Williams legitimized Riley and got him a massive payday. I’m not saying coaches are not important because good coaches have executive skills, organizational skills, leadership skills, motivational etc… but they can’t turn sheep into dogs. They can’t manipulate a player who isn’t very good or good into being great — that comes from the player.
Unfortunately for Riley, he hasn’t had coattails to ride on the lately. We’ve seen in over and over again with most other coaches e.g. Belichick, Kyle Shanahan (this season), Chip Kelley, Ed Orgeron etc….
A good coach is often times is the beneficiary of great talent and timing.
