What you live is also what your children learn, sadly and gladly.
1. Life number one: Archaea and family lived with heavy CC debt.
Children from life number one sees a few of the children now living with debt. (Youngest child learned to avoid debt, is frugal with savings and investments).
2. New Life: new HCBW is always frugal, or at least doesn't spend more than we can pay, and her children, and none live with debt, all have savings and investments.
The debt cycle gets passed down to your children if you're not careful. It's what they know if they see parents doing it.

I'm not aware of any cards these days where interest doesn't begin to accrue from the date of purchase,

Maybe it's from experience with an old card. I have mine on autopay so there is never any carry over, but I haven't
