One year, we did kind of a local EFY thing. This guy ended up as the keynote speaker somehow.
He relayed the tale about LED ZEP recording Stairway to Heaven in something of a trance...regaled us with how he and some colleagues sang the song and couldn't get it to sound the same as the LZ version when played backwards. Then they tried singing it "EXACTLY" like LZ. They STILL couldn't get it to sound the same. There was some talk of what modern music was doing to kids, its nefarious intentions, etc.
So then, the big moment. He plays it backwards. It sounds something like "DSFJEEPGMCMPEPW PEGOINWEGOGPWSSSSSSS NAAAAERRRRDDDDD SAAATAAANN WGGGGGGGGOOOROOORR FSSSSSBBBBBBVVIIIIIIINN SAAAAAAATN...."
Up to that point, he'd spun a rather compelling tale. But then he says, and I cannot believe I still remember this (geez, maybe the work of the devil was at hand somehow), "Now I don't know about you, but what I hear is 'Glory, glory to my dear Satan. There are two paths...but the path for you is the path of Satan." Even at a young age, having great trust in LDS authority figures, I was like "O.K., I definitely did NOT hear THAT."
Later, it was discovered that this professor was receiving kickbacks from Afterglow and a couple other LDS artists pushing themselves as a wholesome alternative to what was on the radio at the time. O.K., I made the last part up. But it would go a long way towards explaining that dude's talk.
