Do you see anyone coming to BYU and beating out Retzlaf?
If anyone was going to do it, Bohanon was. He had experience, and run good productive offenses, and had a shot.

But he couldn't beat out Jake. What are the chances of a new dude showing up and learning the offense well enough to beat him this year? If I was a transfer grad, I wouldn't do it. If I were an underclassman who hoped to start in the future but wouldn't have my plans messed up by not starting next year, I might roll the dice and see if I could beat him out, knowing that if I don't I'll have a great chance at winning the job the following year.

But there are limited players who will even want to come compete with an entrenched starter if they've only got one year to go.

I'm sure they'll call it a competition next year. But everyone already knows who is going to start.
