Is it to crown the best team or a champion of the best teams? If it is just
about the best team, there should never be any automatic qualification, in any sport. The MLB should just pick the 12 best teams regardless of league or division or record, if there is a good reason that record isn't indicative of their potential.
Actually, they should just reduce the number of teams. Adding teams and games just increases the volatility.
In fact, if the goal is crowning the best team, then leagues should just vote on the best team based on watching the games. Having a playoff locks you in to crowning a team the best even if you know it was a fluke and was a 1 in a 100.
Playoffs have never been solely (or even primarily) about making the best team champion.

I don't. Coppin State, if good enough to get the 16 has a better shot vs. a #1 Duke than JSU has at Oregon. Not close.
