I think much of the pushback on the story (seemingly coming from mostly Alabama fans)
is the misunderstanding of what AJ represents. The Alabama fans rightfully (probably) point out that $5M is more than their current entire NIL budget. It probably is. And it doesn't mean that going forward Alabama is going to spend that much. Or that BYU will either.

AJ is seen not just as the next No.1 pick in the NBA draft, but has repeatedly been reported as a "generational talent." So multiple schools were willing to stretch to get him, recognizing the opportunity.

Despite the handwringing, this doesn't necessarily usher in a new arms race in NIL spending that will leave other programs completely out of the field. It seems to be more of a one-off situation.
