IMO, tweaks in the red zone. What they've done with Retzlaff is incredible

And they do a great job moving the ball until about the 15 yd line.

My diagnosis of their problem (for the absolutely 0 that it's worth) is that they rely on vertical passing (or the threat of vertical passing) to spread the defense out, and that goes away inside the 20 (definitely inside the 15 as the field gets more compressed and the defense can fill space by default).

If I was BYU, I'd really work on two things:

  • Inside run: I'd love to see more power and counter inside the 15. BYU has consistently developed outstanding short-yardage backs, and typically does well run-blocking. I'd love to see a team that knows they can get 3-4 yards any time they need it, anywhere on the field
  • Horizontal spacing: Things like mesh routes, pick/rub routes, wide splits, motion, QB roll-outs, and tunnel screens are used by many of the better offenses to create space for players inside the red zone—but it seems to me like BYU continues to run normal pass concepts out of their standard sets. I'd love to see BYU install some different sets that incorporate some of these elements so that they have some "need a TD" plays they can dial up
