disgusting, typically have almost nothing to do with the opponent's actual religion or ethnicity. The chant aimed at BYU fans and players is directed specifically at the faith of the opposing players and fans with the specificity to intimidate or belittle.

And they are not ignored. When I lived in Europe, when fans chanted anti-Semitic slogans, it was in the news, and teams took action - often much more heavy handed than just apologies. In Germany, it could land a person in jail. Even in Italy, where they are often immune to what fans say because everything is a joke to Italians (especially around race and religion), they took it seriously. The leaders of the Jewish community were very clear it was unacceptable. The Italian President spoke out about it. 

The idea that because worse anti-Semitic chants in euro soccer happen, so this is in some way okay is insipidly stupid. At least come up with an original reason why it's okay other than that of the keyboard tough guy.
