You’re assuming that each team in a conference plays an equally difficult
schedule. But that’s not the case even within a given conference, let alone when comparing teams from different conferences.
You mentioned Alabama. Well, their SOS was a lot harder than BYU’s. Sure, they lost 3 games, which certainly matters. But they played Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Missouri.
