I lost my taste and smell in late December of 2019 during the worst upper respiratory infection I had ever had...
It sucked. At a Mexican restaurant I had ordered fish tacos. Absolutely no flavor of any sort. It was so weird and so depressing in some ways because I had never experienced that before.

I can't confirm it was COVID because supposedly it hadn't come to the USA until a couple months later, but I remain convinced it was already here in late 2019 and I got it along with a lot of my coworkers, etc.

But fortunately for me, my taste gradually returned after a couple weeks. I also had a cough so bad it caused a strained muscle in my rib cage that felt like a knife twisting into my chest every time I coughed. It was absolute torture.

I finally figured out that if I pulled my arm inward while flexing my pecs everytime I coughed, it would minimize the pain and after a couple weeks, that gradually got better too even though the cough persisted a good 3+ months thereafter, but became much more mild through that time than it had been.

So if all you get out of it is loss of taste, consider yourself lucky. I hope it only lasts for no more than a few weeks for you and not months to years like it has for others.

I've had confirmed COVID at least once or twice since then, but nothing as bad as whatever I had late 2019 into early 2020.
