Watching the replay it looks like the ref called it incomplete.

You can see it at the 20 second mark of this video.

Part 4:

Roughly 13 minutes after ASU ran what was thought to be the final play of the game, the field is cleared. BYU gets the ball at the 49 with one second left.

QB Jake Retzlaff actually completes the pass to receiver Chase Roberts, but short of the end zone.

In the moment I figured he was saying that Roberts was short of the endzone, but he's making the incomplete signal so I guess that was the ruling? Super weird.
